Brendan Beales studied at York University with John Paynter and David Blake, and on the Master's Degree programme at London University with Peter Dickinson.

In 1987 he became artistic director for Musicworks, Brixton, and two years later was made responsible for organising their INSET(In-Service Education for Teachers) programme.  He has worked extensively with young people in primary and secondary schools, writing and enabling students to write and improvise in a variety of styles (opera, jazz, folk song, classical, pop etc.).

Since 1990 he has been running composition projects and musicianship classes at Goldsmiths' College, and appears frequently as composer-in-residence and animateur for The London Philharmonic, The Royal Philharmonic, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and The Northern Sinfonia.

As a lyricist he has worked with Paul Patterson on the recently published Little Red Riding Hood Songbook, and with Hugh Shrapnel on the opera War Games.

Compositions include
Creepsymphony (commissioned by The London Philharmonic Orchestra), Good Times/Bad Times (commissioned by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) and The Fire of London, a cantata commissioned by the Barnes Music Society. He has also composed a number of operas and musicals for young people.

The new song - "Jupiter" - will be performed at London's Royal Festival Hall on March 10th and 15th 2002 by an audience of approximately 3,000 young persons, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Angus
